Le ferry est sans aucun doute la solution préférée des voyageurs pour plusieurs raisons. Tout d'abord, ce moyen de transport permet d'emmener sa voiture aux îles Vestmann ainsi il est possible de se rendre aux 4 coins de Heimaey.
Ensuite, le tarif est raisonnable mais il faut savoir qu'il est préférable de réserver à l'avance. Le départ se fait de la petite ville de Landeyjahöfn non loin de Skogafoss. Aussi, l'arrivée près de Heimaey est assez inoubliable et impressionnante avec une vue imprenable sur les falaises.
La traversée dure environ 40 minutes et il peut arriver que la mer soit un peu agitée pour les plus sensibles.
